6 ways to manage pelvic organ prolapse
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is where the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus or bowel) shift from their normal position within the pelvic cavity. This can sometimes be felt as a heaviness or bulge in the vagina. Many things can cause prolapse one of the most common is pregnancy and childbirth. However there are several ways in which you can assist with reducing prolapse symptoms. Below are 6 ways to reduce the symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse. As always these tips should not be substituted for medical advice.
try to reduce or minimize constipation. Repetitive pushing and straining can worsen prolapse symptoms.
Try to spend time during the day lying down. This allows relief and pressure to be taken off the pelvic floor.
Try to continue with gentle walking and exercise. Walking and low intensity exercise will not make the prolapse worse.
Trial a pessary or support device. This can assist with supporting the prolapse so that you can continue with higher intensity activities.
Try to avoid pushing or straining when opening your bladder or bowels. This does not make you more efficient at emptying and again can make the prolapse worse.
Seek advice from a Womenβs Health Physiotherapist. We can assess (with consent) to determine the type and grade of the prolapse and provide tailored advice to ensure you can continue on with normal life.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse does not mean you have to stop doing all of the things you love and you can achieve significant relief from many of your symptoms.
